Case Studies in Banking

The Database of Active Sales (DAKTO) is an information system designed for storage and provision of consolidated and consistent data about active sales (including passive sales to complete the portfolio) for effective management of sales at all management levels. It was designed specially for the VÚB a.s.

From the architectural aspect, it is a partially decentralised two-layer client-server application. The DAKTO system uses the following components of the Microsoft Backoffice suite:

  • MS SNA server (with the Fusion superstructure) for the transfer of data from the IBM mainframe into the Windows NT environment (extracts are not transferred directly into the DAKTO system; first they are imported into the Datawarehouse system, and then the necessary data are transferred from there into the DAKTO system);
  • MS SQL server for the storage of:
    • the data from the VUB's production systems (including imported numerical code lists) and the data generated by their subsequent processing;
    • the data manually entered at the branches and headquarters;
    • the data that form items of manually kept numerical code lists;
    • the data of a configuration character;
  • MS Windows NT environment, in which the above program instrument as well as the DAKTO application (developed in MS Visual Basic) work;
  • MS Excel for the presentation of some outputs that are created by the DAKTO application, but which are further displayed, printed, processed and archived by respective users in the MS Excel environment.
Besides the Microsoft Backoffice suite, the DAKTO system also uses some other tools and software suites:
  • tools for the extraction of data from source systems;
  • MS Visual Basic, in which the application itself is written.

The input data for the DAKTO system are mostly extracts of production systems that are transferred from the environment of a respective source information system on an SQL server to the Window NT environment on the so-called distribution server (DS). A part of these data is directly imported by the DAKTO system into tables, described in a data model. The rest of the data is imported from the distribution server by the Datawarehouse (DWH) system, which carries out their primary validation, consolidation and aggregation. The necessary data are imported from the Datawarehouse system into the DAKTO system. Using this method, the data are imported into several systems (e.g. Controlling, Obligatory Recording and other superstructure - managerial information systems of the VÚB bank). It means that it is not necessary to carry out the extraction of data from the source information systems for each superstructure system separately. All extracts from the source information systems are concentrated in one place (on a distribution server) and, according to specific requirements and defined access rights, the imported data are distributed from there to individual superstructure systems. This solution meets the conditions for access rights as well as the safety and protection of data during their transfer and storage in information systems.

Headquarters/branch administrators are in charge of the data import control, monitoring and adjustment of their processing algorithms and branch extracts generation, securing transfers of relevant data connected with organisational changes, and conducting other administrative activities.

This product won the Main Prize in the contest on The Best Product Application in the Czech and Slovak Republics for the Year 2000, declared by the Microsoft company.
